Anesthesiology is a branch of medicine that deals with pain management, maintaining the vital functions of the patient, and caring for the patient before, during, and after surgical procedures. Although it is often exclusively associated with "putting to sleep" patients, its scope of practice is much broader and includes resuscitation and intensive care for the most serious patients.
