Urine Cytology

Urine cytology is a laboratory analysis used to examine cells in the urine to determine the health status of the urinary system. The analysis includes a microscopic examination of the cells to identify any signs of disease or inflammation.

WHAT DISEASES AND CONDITIONS CAN BE DETECTED?

Urine cytology can diagnose various diseases of the urinary system, including:

  • Urinary tract infections (cystitis, pyelonephritis)
  • Inflammatory diseases of the urinary system (glomerulonephritis, interstitial nephritis)
  • Tumor diseases (renal cells, ureteral cells)
  • Chronic diseases of the urinary system (nephropathy, nephrosclerosis)
  • Complications after urological surgeries.

However, urine cytology is not always 100% reliable and can yield false-negative or false-positive results. Therefore, it is often combined with other diagnostic methods, such as clinical examination, biochemical analyses, and urine bacterial culture, to obtain the most accurate diagnosis.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

Urine cytology is performed by collecting a urine sample. The patient usually collects the urine sample at home, and then the sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis. In the laboratory, the cells are extracted from the sample and placed on a slide for microscopic examination. The cytologist then examines the cells to assess their appearance and identify any abnormalities. Results are usually delivered within a few days.
