Thyroid Ultrasound

Thyroid ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the thyroid gland. This technique uses an ultrasound device that emits sound waves into the body and captures reflected signals to create an image of the organ. Thyroid ultrasound is used to assess the size, shape, and structure of the thyroid gland, as well as to detect any irregularities or abnormalities in the organ, such as cysts, nodules, tumors, or inflammation. This procedure is often used as part of routine thyroid assessment, as well as for diagnosing various thyroid diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or autoimmune thyroiditis.

HOW IS IT CONDUCTED?

Before the examination, the patient will be asked to sit on the table and then lie on their back with their head and neck elevated. During the examination, the doctor applies gel to the neck area to improve the conduction of ultrasound waves and avoid air between the probe and the skin. During the examination, the patient may need to turn their head in different directions or hold their breath for a better view of the thyroid image. During the examination, a slight pressure from the sensor on the skin may be felt, but the ultrasound does not cause pain. After the examination, the doctor will wipe the gel off the neck area. The doctor will then review the obtained images and provide a diagnosis. In some cases, further examination, such as a biopsy, may be required to confirm the diagnosis.

HOW TO PREPARE?

Preparation for a thyroid ultrasound is simple and usually does not require special measures. However, in some cases, the doctor may recommend specific guidelines or instructions before the examination. Therefore, it is important to discuss any instructions with your doctor before the examination. Typically, preparation for a thyroid ultrasound includes the following:

  1. No special dietary restrictions: There is no need for fasting or dietary restrictions before the thyroid ultrasound.
  2. If you are wearing a necklace, it should be removed before the examination so it does not interfere with the examination.
  3. Dress comfortably: It is advisable to wear comfortable and loose clothing that allows easy access to the neck area.
  4. Bring all medical documents with you: If you have previous thyroid ultrasound findings or other medical documents related to your health condition, it is necessary to bring them with you to the examination.
  5. Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking: If you are taking medications or dietary supplements, inform your doctor about them. In some cases, the doctor may recommend stopping medication before the examination.

It is important to emphasize that the patient should not stop taking medications without consulting a doctor. Also, if there are any other specific instructions or preparations for the thyroid ultrasound, the doctor will inform the patient about them before the examination.
