Paraphimosis
Paraphimosis is a medical condition in which the narrow skin ring that surrounds the head of the penis (called the foreskin) tightens around it and cannot return to its normal position over the head of the penis. This can cause bleeding, swelling, and pain, and may lead to serious complications if not treated. Paraphimosis usually occurs as a complication following an unsuccessful attempt to reduce or remove the foreskin. It is an urgent medical condition that requires prompt treatment to avoid complications. Treatment involves various methods, including ice packs, the use of lubricants, and in some cases, surgical intervention.
HOW DOES IT HAPPEN?
Paraphimosis most commonly occurs when the foreskin that is retracted behind the head of the penis cannot be returned back to its place over the head. This typically happens when the foreskin is too tight or when there is swelling of the head of the penis or surrounding area. Paraphimosis can occur during sexual intercourse, after a medical procedure such as circumcision, or after an unsuccessful attempt to reduce or remove the foreskin. In some men, paraphimosis can occur spontaneously without any obvious cause. In any case, paraphimosis is an urgent medical condition that requires prompt treatment to avoid complications.
HOW IS IT TREATED?
The treatment of paraphimosis depends on the severity and duration of the symptoms. In milder cases, treatment may be performed using ice packs and applying local anesthetics and lubricants to reduce swelling and facilitate the return of the foreskin to its place. In more severe cases, surgical treatment may be necessary. One of the methods used by doctors is manually returning the foreskin back to its place. This is usually performed under local anesthesia to reduce pain and minimize the risk of tissue damage. Once the foreskin is returned to its place, a bandage is applied to prevent further constriction and swelling. In some cases, especially when paraphimosis recurs, surgical treatment may be recommended. A surgical procedure called circumcision may be performed to remove the tight skin ring around the head of the penis and prevent further complications. It is important that paraphimosis is treated as soon as possible to avoid complications such as loss of circulation and tissue damage. If you suspect you have paraphimosis, you should seek urgent medical attention.
