Occult Bleeding

The diagnosis of occult bleeding refers to procedures used to detect the presence of bleeding in the body that is not visible to the naked eye. It is most commonly used to diagnose gastrointestinal bleeding, especially in the lower part of the digestive tract. The most well-known method for diagnosing occult bleeding is the guaiac test (Guaiac fecal occult blood test, gFOBT). This test is typically used for the early detection of colorectal cancer and other diseases of the digestive system that may cause bleeding. The test is based on detecting traces of blood in the stool using a chemical reaction. The patient provides a sample of their stool, and laboratory tests can detect the presence of blood that is not visible to the naked eye. In addition, other diagnostic methods, such as endoscopy or colonoscopy, may also be used. These methods allow for direct examination of the digestive tract to identify the source of bleeding and establish an accurate diagnosis. It is important to note that the diagnosis of occult bleeding does not necessarily indicate the presence of a serious illness. Sometimes bleeding can occur due to minor issues or disorders, such as hemorrhoids or inflammatory bowel diseases. However, detecting occult bleeding can be an important step in diagnosing more serious health problems, such as tumors or stomach ulcers. Therefore, it is important to consult a doctor to determine the cause of the bleeding and establish an accurate diagnosis.
