Rectoscopy

Rectoscopy is a medical examination used to inspect the inner part of the rectum and the large intestine. It is usually performed to detect problems such as polyps, cancer, or inflammation. The examination is conducted using a special instrument called a rectoscope, which is inserted through the anus and allows the doctor to see the internal condition of the intestines.

WHO IS RECTOSCOPY RECOMMENDED FOR?

Rectoscopy is recommended for individuals who have symptoms indicating possible problems with the rectum or large intestine, such as bleeding from the anus, changes in stool, pain, or the feeling of incomplete bowel evacuation. It is also recommended for individuals who have previously had polyps or other abnormalities in their intestines, as well as for those who have an increased risk of colon cancer.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EXAMINATION?

Before the examination, the patient should consult with a specialist regarding any necessary bowel cleansing before the examination itself. During the examination, the patient lies on their left side, and the doctor will use a rectoscope inserted through the anus to inspect the inner part of the intestine. If abnormalities are detected, the doctor may take tissue samples for a biopsy.

WHAT CAN BE DIAGNOSED WITH RECTOSCOPY?

Rectoscopy is used to diagnose various problems with the rectum and large intestine, including:

  • Polyps: benign tumors that grow on the walls of the intestine
  • Inflammations: such as proctitis or colitis
Colon cancer: which can occur in the rectum or colon
  • Diverticula: bulges on the walls of the intestine
  • Hemorrhoids: bulges of veins in the anus
  • Fecal incontinence: involuntary passing of stool
  • Stenosis: narrowing of the intestinal lumen
  • Crohn's disease: chronic inflammation of the intestine
  • Ulcerative colitis: chronic inflammation of the large intestine

Rectoscopy also allows the doctor to take tissue samples (biopsy) to confirm a diagnosis, or if cancer is suspected, to conduct a histological examination.
