Abdominal ultrasound
Abdominal ultrasound is a diagnostic examination used to examine the internal organs of the abdomen, including the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, and intestines. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency ultrasound waves emitted through the skin and tissues to create an image of the internal organs on the screen. Abdominal ultrasound is commonly used to assess the size, shape, and condition of the organs, detect cysts, tumors, fluid, or bleeding. This examination can also be used to evaluate blood flow through blood vessels in the abdomen. The examination usually lasts about 30 minutes and does not require any special preparation. The patient will be asked to lie on their back while the doctor moves the probe over the abdomen to create an image of the organs. After the examination is completed, the patient can return to daily activities without any restrictions.
HOW IS IT CONDUCTED?
The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes and is usually performed as follows:
- Patient preparation: The patient is usually prepared for the abdominal ultrasound by lying on their back on a bed or table, with their arms at their sides. They need to be in a relaxed state and breathe normally.
- Gel application: The doctor will apply gel to the patient's abdomen to reduce air resistance and allow better conductivity of the ultrasound waves.
- Probe movement: The doctor will place the probe on different areas of the abdomen and move it while viewing images of the organs on the monitor. The probe emits ultrasound waves that pass through the body and reflect off the organs, which are then captured by a sensor.
- Image analysis: The doctor will analyze the images on the monitor and assess the size, shape, structure, and function of the organs. If any abnormalities are noticed, additional tests may be recommended.
- Procedure completion: After the procedure is completed, the patient will wipe the gel off their abdomen and can return to their usual activities without any restrictions.
The abdominal ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and painless procedure that is often used to assess the health of the internal organs of the abdomen.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EXAMINATION?
Preparation for an abdominal ultrasound is usually straightforward and does not require special preparation. Here are some general tips for preparing for an abdominal ultrasound:
- Prepare for the examination: Patients usually come in comfortable clothing, but they should keep in mind that they may need to remove clothing below the waist and put on a medical gown during the examination.
- Stay hydrated: It is recommended that patients drink enough fluids, ideally water, before the examination so that the organs in the abdomen are better visible on the screen.
- Do not urinate: It is advisable for the patient not to urinate for a few hours before the examination in order to adequately visualize the bladder.
- Follow dietary instructions: In some cases, the doctor may recommend certain dietary changes before the examination, such as food or drink restrictions. For example, it may be recommended to avoid fatty foods, carbonated drinks, or dairy products for several hours before the examination. This is especially important for visualizing the stomach.
- Gallbladder ultrasound: If the abdominal ultrasound is performed for diagnostic purposes of the gallbladder, the patient is usually advised not to eat or drink anything 6 hours before the examination to avoid bile formation.
It is important to follow the instructions given by the doctor or technician before the abdominal ultrasound to ensure a successful examination.
