Tonsil operations

Tonsil surgery (tonsillectomy) is a medical procedure used to remove the tonsils, a part of the lymphatic system in the throat. The operation can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia, depending on the complexity and patient requirements.

WHEN IS SURGERY INDICATED?

Tonsil surgery is indicated in the following situations:

  1. When the tonsils are enlarged and cause problems with chewing, swallowing, or appear as uncomfortable edges on the tongue.
  2. When the tonsils cause issues with the bony structure of the teeth or dental bone infections.
  3. When the tonsils cause aesthetic problems, such as deformities of the oral cavity or disrupt the aesthetic appearance of the face.
  4. When the tonsils lead to disturbances in jaw function, resulting in pain in the neck, shoulders, or head.

HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

Tonsil surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. The procedure typically lasts about an hour.

The tonsil surgery procedure includes the following steps:

  1. Incision: The otorhinolaryngologist cuts through the skin and separates the muscles in the mouth to access the tonsils.
  2. Removal of the tonsils: The tonsil is removed using specialized tools, such as microsurgical instruments or coblator.

After the surgery, the patient will be referred for recovery, and during recovery, visits to the dentist for monitoring will be scheduled, along with recommendations for certain measures for rapid recovery. The total time required for complete recovery varies from patient to patient but usually takes from several days to several weeks.

HOW TO PREPARE?

Preparation for tonsil surgery involves the following steps:

  1. Examination: Before the surgery, the patient will need to undergo an examination to determine the condition of the tonsils and identify the best surgical plan.
  2. Medical history: The patient will need to complete a medical history form, which will include information about their medical history, allergies, and medications.
  3. Recommended preparation measures: The patient will need to stop taking certain medications before surgery, such as anticoagulants and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  4. Consent: The patient will need to sign a consent form for the surgery to ensure they are informed about the possible risks and benefits of the surgery.
  5. Registration: The patient will need to check in for surgery at the agreed time and place.

After the surgery, the patient will receive instructions on how to recover quickly and what measures to take to prevent problems. The total time needed for complete recovery varies from patient to patient but usually lasts from several days to several weeks.
