Abdominal ultrasound

Abdominal ultrasound is a diagnostic examination used to view the internal organs of the abdomen, including the liver, pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, kidneys, and intestines. It is a non-invasive procedure that uses high-frequency ultrasound waves emitted through the skin and tissues to create an image of the internal organs on a screen. Abdominal ultrasound is typically used to assess the size, shape, and condition of the organs, detect cysts, tumors, fluid, or bleeding. This examination can also be used to evaluate blood flow through the blood vessels in the abdomen. The examination usually lasts about 30 minutes and does not require any special preparation. The patient will be asked to lie on their back while the doctor moves the probe over the abdomen to create an image of the organs. After the examination is completed, the patient can return to their daily activities without any restrictions.

HOW IS IT CONDUCTED?

The procedure takes about 30-45 minutes and is typically performed as follows:

  1. Patient preparation: The patient is usually prepared for the abdominal ultrasound by lying on their back on a bed or table, with their arms at their sides. They need to be in a relaxed state and breathe normally.
  2. Gel application: The doctor will apply gel to the patient's abdomen to reduce air resistance and improve the conductivity of the ultrasound waves.
  3. Probe movement: The doctor will place the probe on different parts of the abdomen and move it around while observing images of the organs on the monitor. The probe emits ultrasound waves that pass through the body and reflect off the organs, which are then detected by the sensor.
  4. Image analysis: The doctor will analyze the images on the monitor and assess the size, shape, structure, and function of the organs. If they notice any abnormalities, they may recommend further examinations.
  5. Procedure completion: After the procedure is completed, the patient will wipe the gel off their abdomen and can return to their usual activities without any restrictions.

Abdominal ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive, and painless procedure commonly used to assess the health of the internal organs of the abdomen.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE EXAMINATION?

Preparation for abdominal ultrasound is usually straightforward and does not require special preparation. Here are some general tips for preparing for an abdominal ultrasound:

  1. Prepare for the examination: Patients usually come in comfortable clothing but should keep in mind that they may need to remove clothing below the waist and wear a medical gown during the examination.
  2. Stay hydrated: Patients are advised to drink enough fluids, ideally water, before the examination to ensure the abdominal organs are better visible on the screen.
  3. Do not urinate: It is preferable for the patient not to urinate for several hours before the examination to allow for better visualization of the bladder.
  4. Follow dietary instructions: In some cases, the doctor may recommend specific dietary changes before the examination, such as food or drink restrictions. For example, it may be advised to avoid fatty foods, carbonated drinks, or dairy products several hours before the examination. This is especially important for visualizing the stomach.
  5. Gallbladder ultrasound: If the abdominal ultrasound is being performed for gallbladder diagnostic purposes, the patient is usually advised not to eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to the examination to avoid bile formation.

It is important to follow the instructions you receive from your doctor or technician before the abdominal ultrasound to ensure a successful examination.
