Thyroid Ultrasound
Thyroid ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the thyroid gland. This technique uses an ultrasound device that emits sound waves into the body and captures reflected signals to create an image of the organ. Thyroid ultrasound is used to assess the size, shape, and structure of the thyroid gland, as well as to detect potential abnormalities or irregularities in the organ, such as cysts, nodules, tumors, or inflammations. This procedure is often used as part of routine thyroid assessments, as well as for diagnosing various thyroid diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, or autoimmune thyroiditis.
HOW IS IT PERFORMED?
Before the examination, the patient will be asked to sit at a table, and then lie back with their head and neck elevated. During the examination, the doctor applies gel to the neck area to improve the conduction of ultrasound waves and avoid air between the probe and skin. During the examination, the patient may need to turn their head in different directions or hold their breath to better visualize the thyroid image. During the examination, one may feel slight pressure from the sensor on the skin, but the ultrasound does not cause pain. After the examination, the doctor will wipe off the gel from the neck area. The doctor will then review the obtained images and provide a diagnosis. In some cases, an additional procedure, such as a biopsy, may be requested to confirm the diagnosis.
HOW TO PREPARE?
Preparation for a thyroid ultrasound is simple and typically does not require special measures. However, in some cases, a doctor may recommend specific guidelines or instructions before the examination. Therefore, it is important to discuss any instructions with your physician before the exam.
Typically, preparation for a thyroid ultrasound involves the following:
- No special dietary restrictions: There is no need for fasting or dietary restrictions before the thyroid ultrasound.
If you are wearing a necklace, it must be removed before the exam so it does not interfere with the examination. - Dress comfortably: It is advisable to wear comfortable and loose clothing that allows easy access to the neck area.
- Bring all medical documents with you:
- If you have previous thyroid ultrasound findings or other medical documents related to your health condition, you need to bring them with you to the examination.
- Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking: If you are taking medications or dietary supplements, inform your doctor about it. In some cases, the doctor may recommend stopping certain medications before the examination.
It is important to emphasize that the patient should not stop taking medications without consulting their doctor. Also, if there are any other specific instructions or preparations for the thyroid ultrasound, the doctor will inform the patient about it before the examination.
