Diagnostic Laparoscopy

Diagnostic laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to examine the interior of the abdominal cavity, particularly the areas around the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas, small and large intestines, and reproductive organs. The procedure is often useful in diagnosing the causes of unclear abdominal pain, identifying tumors, inflammatory processes or infections, and assessing injuries following abdominal trauma. It is also used in infertility diagnostics.

When is it Indicated in Gynecology?

Unexplained pelvic pain: If a woman experiences chronic pelvic pain of uncertain origin not identifiable by standard diagnostic methods. Infertility investigation: Diagnostic laparoscopy can be used to determine the causes of infertility, including checking for the patency of the fallopian tubes, as well as identifying and treating conditions that may affect fertility, such as endometriosis or adhesions. Suspected endometriosis: Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to that which lines the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain and other symptoms. Laparoscopy allows for visualization and biopsy of suspicious areas. Ovarian cysts or masses: Laparoscopy is used to assess cysts or masses on the ovaries to determine whether they are benign or malignant. Abnormal bleeding: In women with abnormal uterine bleeding that cannot be explained by other tests, laparoscopy may assist in identifying causes such as polyps or fibroids. Ectopic pregnancy: Laparoscopy is often used to diagnose and treat ectopic pregnancy, where a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus. Assessment and treatment of adhesions: Adhesions are bands of scar tissue that can cause pain and fertility issues. Laparoscopy can assist in their diagnosis and removal. Uterine anomalies: In some cases, laparoscopy is used to assess uterine abnormalities, such as septums or developmental anomalies. Diagnostic laparoscopy allows doctors to directly visualize internal reproductive organs and perform minor surgical interventions if necessary, often providing a more accurate diagnosis than is possible with other, less invasive methods.
