Gynecological ultrasound - transabdominal, transvaginal

Gynecological ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure used to visualize female reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and, in pregnant women, the fetus. This procedure uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create images of the internal structures of the body. Gynecological ultrasound is non-invasive, safe, and usually painless. This procedure is quick, does not require special preparation (except for transabdominal ultrasound, where patients are sometimes asked to have a full bladder), and carries no risks associated with radiation, making it a safe option for routine examinations and monitoring the condition of the reproductive system. There are two main types of gynecological ultrasound: Transabdominal ultrasound: This type of ultrasound is performed over the abdomen. The patient lies on her back, and ultrasound gel is applied to the skin of the abdomen to allow better transmission of sound waves. The ultrasound device (probe) is then moved across the abdomen, creating images of the reproductive organs. Transvaginal ultrasound: During transvaginal ultrasound, a specially designed probe is inserted into the vagina. This approach provides better and more detailed images, especially in younger women or those who have not given birth. This type of ultrasound is particularly useful for assessing the internal structures of the uterus and ovaries.

What is it used for?

  • Diagnosing and monitoring pregnancy.
  • Detecting and monitoring ovarian cysts or fibroids in the uterus.
  • Investigating the causes of infertility.
  • Evaluating abnormal vaginal bleeding.
  • Detecting and monitoring gynecological cancers.
  • Assisting in the placement of intrauterine devices (IUD).
