D&C

D&C is a gynecological procedure that involves scraping the inner layer of the uterus (endometrium) to obtain tissue samples for diagnostic analysis. This procedure is usually performed when there are abnormalities in the menstrual cycle, such as irregular, heavy, or prolonged menstrual bleeding, or in cases where there is a suspicion of abnormalities within the uterus, including precancerous changes or cancer.

Why is it performed?

D&C is performed to diagnose the causes of abnormal vaginal bleeding, determine the presence or rule out suspicion of precancerous or cancerous cells in the uterus, and, in some cases, to assess the causes of infertility. The results of histological analysis can provide important information about the health of the uterus and assist in further treatment planning.

How is it performed?

The procedure is typically performed under general or local anesthesia. The doctor inserts instruments through the cervix (the neck of the uterus) to reach the uterine cavity. A special instrument called a curette is used to carefully scrape tissue from the endometrium. Tissue samples are then sent to a laboratory for histological analysis. After the D&C, the patient may experience mild bleeding and cramps. Rest and avoiding heavy physical activities for a short time after the procedure is recommended.
